Till the Field

You can resist the monocrop. The research says so, the developmental psychologists say so, and the stubborn, ungovernable fact of your own consciousness — the part of you that clicked on this article instead of the rage-bait three tabs over, the part that made it this far without scrolling to the comments to find someone to be furious at says so.

Cultivate the habit of the second question. The first is easy: What happened? The second is the one that costs you something: What did I miss? Ask it of your own positions with the same rigor you’d demand of an opponent’s. Read the strongest version of the argument you disagree with — the version written by someone who actually believes it, not the straw effigy your preferred pundit built for you to torch. Sit inside an unresolved question for ten minutes without reaching for your phone.

Before you rush to declare the world defective, pause long enough to consider the quieter, more inconvenient possibility: the flaw might be yours. When something strikes you as idiotic or misshapen, assume — at least for a breath — that the idiocy isn’t in the thing itself, but in the gap between your understanding and the truth it’s trying to show you. The world is rarely as stupid as we are eager to pronounce it; more often, it’s our own blindness begging to be corrected.

Put real effort into trying to falsify any belief before you adopt it as conviction. Hold fast to no position unless you can defend it with at least a modest, reasoned argument. The discomfort you feel in doing all this is the sensation of topsoil breaking after a long frost. It’s messy, and it’s supposed to be tough work. It’ll hurt a little.
